How do I copy a relationship from one actor to another (different sex, different age...)?

Suppose there is a relationship between an actor and an object that you want to copy to a different kind of actor, e.g., male to female or adult to a teenager.   Or you resized an actor and you want to recreate a relationship that no longer is available.

Two Examples:

Adapting a relationship where one actor already has that relationship but you want to apply it to another

For example, the adult males has a "smoking cigarette" pose but the young boy does not, and your story requires that he smokes.
(Not that we encourage smoking by anyone nor have we received anything of value from the tobacco companies, mind you.)

  1. Put an adult male in the "smoking cigarette" relation with the cigarette object.
  2. Click the OBJECTS menu and choose UNGLUE OBJECTS.  (Some relationships automatically glue things together.)
  3. Deselect everything by going to the EDIT Menu and choosing UNSELECT ALL
  4. Select the two actors (using SHIFT+CLICK) but not the object with which they have a relationship.  Make sure that the display at the bottom of the window says "2 objects selected".
  5. Click the OBJECTS menu and choose SWAP OBJECT POSITIONS
  6. The boy will now be in a smoking pose, but the cigarette will not be quite in his mouth because the boy is shorter than the adult.
  7. Select the boy and the cigarette.
  8. Choose Free Positioning Mode from the Tools menu.
  9. Adjust the position of the cigarette and the actor's arm until they are in the final relationship
  10. Click the APPLY button to leave Free Positioning Mode.
  11. Click the RELATIONSHIPS menu and choose STORE NEW RELATIONSHIP
  12. Give the relationship a name such as "smoking cigarette" and choose the other settings in the dialog.
Creating a relationship for a new object or one which doesn't have any relationships
For example, say you imported a chair--the Iron Throne--or took one of ours and resized it so that the existing relationships are broken.
The process then, is similar to the one above except first:
  1. Find an actor object/pair that are in a similar relationship, such as an actor sitting in a chair in a pose similar to the one you want, such as the actor and armchair.
  2. With that actor seated in the armchair, select JUST the armchair (SHIFT+CLICK will select it without also selecting the actor) and the Iron Throne that you want him to sit in.
  3. Click the OBJECTS menu and choose SWAP OBJECT POSITIONS
  4. The chairs will now switch position but leave the actor in the same pose.
  5. Select and delete the armchair
  6. Select both the new chair and the actor
  7. Choose Free Positioning Mode from the Tools menu.
  8. Adjust the position of the actor in the chair as desired.
  9. Click the APPLY button to leave Free Positioning Mode.
  10. Click the RELATIONSHIPS menu and choose STORE NEW RELATIONSHIP
  11. Give the relationship a name such as "seated in iron throne" and save
